"Legal," Joseph LeBaron jokingly said as he signed himself into becoming the new U.S. ambassador to Qatar.



The mood was high as old friends, classmates, alumni and family showed support to LeBaron during his oath. LeBaron was joined by his wife and daughter as interim PSU President Michael F. Reardon delivered presiding remarks to the anxious crowd.



Paul De Muniz (PSU class of '72), chief justice of the Oregon Supreme Court, administered the oath of office to LeBaron.

Portland State is planning the construction of a new building for the School of Business Administration in order to meet increasing demands for space.



The new building will be located at the southwest corner of Market Street and Southwest Park, and is slated to cover the entire block. The space is currently home to the Harder House and the Extended Studies buildings, as well as a five-story student residence, the Parkway building.

After attending Portland State University as an undergraduate during the 1960s, Joseph LeBaron joined the United States Air Force and was sent to Turkey. The cultural experiences he had there reawakened LeBaron's early childhood interest in the Middle East.



"It had the religious significance of the Middle East, Jerusalem, to the world history, which I learned about at church and through, eventually, Portland State," LeBaron said. "It got me very interested."

OSU to bring back track and field

Beaver fans will soon have another reason to cheer.

OSU will build a track and field facility that is expected to be available for use in 2010. Along with the new track facility, there are plans for the expansion of the women's track and field program as well as the eventual reintroduction of the men's program.

With the building budget for 2009-11 approved by the Oregon Board of Higher Education, Oregon State University looks to improve and construct several buildings on campus, including a new College of Business building, international residence hall and student involvement center.

In 1999, Barry Brown moved into the same low-income housing neighborhood as Caterina Rosenfeld, a 2008 graduate of OSU who majored in fine arts. Brown had a 21-year criminal history including such crimes as stalking and assault.

After Brown, six other criminals moved in to fill up the remaining units.
